How many text messages can an android smart phone hold?

I personally have the Huawei Ascend and it's the first time I'm up to almost 300 in one conversation. Before this phone I had a crappy Motorola that could only hold 100 in total so I just want to know: does the amount of texts vary depending on the phone's memory/storage? Or is there a limit?
